Carving New Traditions: Family Ski Weekends on the Slopes

romanticizing THE WINTER MONTHS

Skiing has always been part of my story, but this season it’s taken on a whole new meaning.. What started as a childhood love has now become a family tradition! Whenever our schedules allow, we pack up and head to the slopes in Monticello, NY, for weekend ski days together! There’s something incredibly special about sharing crisp mountain air, laughter on the chairlift, and that post-ski glow with the people you love most. These weekends aren’t about perfect runs; they’re about presence, memories, and making winter something we truly look forward to.

Growing up on the slopes

I actually grew up skiing in Vermont at Bromley Mountain, where I learned the fundamentals that still guide me today. Bromley taught me confidence, control, and respect for the mountain! Lessons I now get to pass down to my family (kinda). Skiing is such a powerful way to teach kids perseverance, balance, and patience (for themselves and others lol). Whether it’s their first time clipping into skis or their tenth season, every run builds skill and confidence in a way that feels like play.

GETTING THE RIGHT GEAR

If you’re new to skiing or getting back into it as an adult, the right gear makes all the difference. Staying warm, dry, and comfortable allows you to focus on technique and fun rather than frozen fingers. I always recommend starting with proper base layers to regulate body temperature, followed by insulated ski pants (or suit) and a waterproof jacket to protect against wind and snow. Don’t underestimate quality ski socks, gloves, and goggles!! They’re small details that can completely change your experience on the mountain.

You can shop everything I personally wear and recommend here!

Skiing to create memories

What I love most about skiing is how it blends movement, nature, and connection. It’s a workout, a reset, and quality family time all wrapped into one snowy adventure. Whether you’re skiing in Vermont, New York, or anywhere else, starting a simple tradition, like weekend ski days when life allows, can turn winter into your favorite season!! I’ll be sharing more tips, outfits, and behind-the-scenes moments over on my Instagram (@jhonnycurran), so be sure to follow along and hit the slopes with us this season!
