IKEA Kitchen Play Set

Olive & Rhodes’ IKEA Play Kitchen Makeover for under $50!

IKEA’s DUKTIG play kitchen has so much more potential than IKEA is giving it credit for, but I am so happy it’s a blank slate at such an affordable price because it allows us DIYers to get creative and have a little fun!

The play kitchen can be hard to find, but once you get your hands on it, the opportunities are literally endless. With two littles ones, I knew this play kitchen would get a lot of wear and tear, so I didn’t want to break the bank/spend too much time on the remodel & I certainly didn’t want to deal with sanding, priming, and painting, the entire thing (to only have it chip in a few months) so I took a much more simple, yet warm approach for Olive & Rhodes!

Aside from the kitchen, which was purchased directly through Ikea (do not purchase on Amazon it’s triple the cost!), I purchased all of my supplies from Amazon and Home Depot. I  made the kind of simple swaps typically recommended for an easy full-size kitchen makeover & the project took only approx. two hours, but made a world of difference!

My husband I put the kitchen together per the instructions, but subbed out the plastic handles for these wooden ones on the oven, microwave, and drawer. I took five round wood dowels and glued them to the kitchen using wood glue as an added touch.

I bought a rectangle pine slab to replace the plastic stove top and glued two round unfinished wood circles to the top to act as the burners. We then soaked the cane webbing in water for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes you’re going to want to cut the webbing to size and screw it behind the glass on both the microwave and stove. I spray painted the sink white and the faucet & hooks to resemble brass. Lastly, you’re going to replace the metal rod with this 5/8th of an inch wooden one from Home Depot. When you pick it up, ask one of the Home Depot employees to cut the dowel for you while you’re there to 26 inches long!

With a few warm wood accessories to finish it off, including the hanging rattan light & set of wooden eggs, the kitchen was finished & I was left a little jealous as I wanted this kitchen in real life!
